It was hours later when he woke once more. Lying motionless, he was disorientated for several minutes. Then, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he remembered the successful retrieval of his overnight bag. The plastic bag – half full now – was still safely in place, stretched out in front of him, secured by the handles. He bent his head. There was enough rainwater to last several days at least. Resting his head back, he exhaled an enormous sigh of relief: he was going to be able to get out of here.

And then his hand nudged something. Glancing down, he saw the metal flask. A gulp of the strong, reviving coffee, whether it was hot or cold, was just what he needed. His hands steady now, he unscrewed the cap, lifted the flask and gratefully took a gulp. There was no heat left in the coffee – the flask had lost its insulating sweater that had been wrapped around it – but to Isooba, the drink was liquid heaven right now. He knew that in a few minutes the caffeine would kick in, and his hand curled around the mobile phone stashed safely in his pocket. Then it would be time to ring Mara and tell her how much he loved her and what a lifesaver the bag was proving to be. Resting gently, a smile curving his lips, Isooba felt his confidence in the prospect of getting back home safely to her rise in his chest. All he had to do was ring her, give her his approximate location, and she would take care of everything.

Closing his eyes briefly, he felt the welcome relief flood his body. However long it took for the search party to find him, it didn’t matter. He’d made the flight under duress from Smith – the threats against Mara had been sufficient to guarantee Isooba’s acquiescence to his demands. The nightmares he’d suffered would probably stay with him for a while, though. It wasn’t an ordeal you got away with lightly. But that was all they were: nightmares. The vision of the panther with the dead bird in her jaws was simply a vision. Kala had escaped from the crate, it was true, but by now she would be many miles away; no longer a threat to Isooba. The panther in his dream had been carrying a white bird…

Isooba opened his eyes. He looked to the left where the gap in the wreckage was, at the wet earth beyond. No sign of a big cat. He was just about to laugh at his silly fantasies when he saw the feather stuck to the side of a leaf, just beyond the edge of the wreckage. It was a large wing feather – a white one.
